Permanent seat for Sonia Gandhi, Rahul at Congress’s top body? | India News

NEW DELHI: With Congress set to decide its future course of action with organisational revamp and appointment of new office-bearers, the party has a tricky issue to settle—what to do with the two former Congress presidents in its ranks? It is possible that the party may name Sonia Gandhi and Rahul as permanent members to the Congress Working Committee, the top decision-making forum of the party.
Congress is set to hold a plenary session in Raipur from February 24-26 to confirm the election of veteran Mallikarjun Kharge as party president for five years. While the party may hold elections to the CWC at the plenary session, Sonia and Rahul can’t be expected to contest internal elections as pre-eminent members of the party. The key members of the Gandhi family remain the fulcrum of the party even if they are out of the AICC presidency. It is learnt that the party may make them members of CWC in perpetuity to settle their position in the party.
Congress has not held elections to the apex body in two decades, but there is a possibility that elections may be held in the Raipur plenary session. A final decision is still to be taken.
AICC general secretary (organisation) K C Venugopal said during the three-day session, major issues that will be debated are political, economic, international affairs, agriculture and farmers, social justice and empowerment, youth education and employment.
The party will formulate its strategy on these issues and will come out with resolutions during the session, he said.
