Amazon confirms it laid off 18,000 employees since November

Amazon joined the list of technology companies that went on a firing spree last year. In November, The New York Times reported that the company was aiming to lay off around 10,000 employees, however, that number has increased significantly. As per a note by Amazon CEO Andy Jassy, the company has fired 18,000 in the last two months.
Employees working across Amazon Devices and Books businesses as well as in People, Experience, and Technology (PXT) organisations have been laid off. As per Jassy, the majority of role eliminations are in Amazon Stores and PXT organisations.

“Amazon has weathered uncertain and difficult economies in the past, and we will continue to do so. These changes will help us pursue our long-term opportunities with a stronger cost structure; however, I’m also optimistic that we’ll be inventive, resourceful, and scrappy in this time when we’re not hiring expansively and eliminating some roles,” the CEO told the company employees.
The company says it is “working to support those who are affected and are providing packages that include a separation payment, transitional health insurance benefits, and external job placement support.”

Amazon to cut jobs in multiple countries
The layoffs were also reported to affect the company’s employees in India. However, there is no information on that front yet. Jassy said that some of the layoffs would be in Europe and the impacted employees will be informed starting on January 18. In September 2022, the company had around 1.5 million employees in total.
One of the largest layoffs in tech industry
Amazon’s reduction in workforce is one of the largest layoffs in recent times. Last year, Meta announced that it was reducing the headcount by 11,000 employees. Intel has already announced it will be cutting jobs and Google CEO Sundar Pichai hasn’t given any assurance that there won’t be any job cuts in the company.
