CES 2023: Here’s what AMD, Microsoft have to say on AI capabilities for PCs

At CES 2023, AMD launched multiple new mobile, gaming and AI chips. Lisa SU, the CEO of the US-based semiconductor company, talked about AMD technologies in AI, hybrid work, gaming, healthcare, aerospace and sustainable computing. She also noted that AMD has partnered with Microsoft, HP, Lenovo, Magic Leap and Intuitive Surgical to enable pervasive AI.
At the event, Panos Panay, the chief product officer of Microsoft, also said that AI is the future of Windows. “AI is going to reinvent how you do everything on Windows, quite literally,” he told an audience at AMD’s press conference. The executive also showed a demo of the Windows 11 Voice Focus feature on ARM-based devices in which AI completely removed background noise.
“Together with our partners, we highlighted how AMD technology is advancing what is possible in AI, hybrid work, gaming, healthcare, aerospace and sustainable computing. We also launched multiple new mobile, gaming and AI chips that will make 2023 an exciting year for AMD and the industry,” Su added.

AMD’s AI chipsets
AMD launched Alveo V70 AI Accelerator that offers “industry-leading performance and energy efficiency for multiple AI inference workloads.” It is powered by the world’s first integrated data centre CPU and GPU, the AMD Instinct MI300.
The company also announced its new Ryzen 7000 mobile processors claiming that they are the first x86 chips to contain a dedicated AI engine. AMD also claims that the chips are 20% faster than the ones in Apple’s MacBook Pro laptops with M1 Pro chips.

AMD also talked about how AMD’s adaptable computing and AI technology can enable faster diagnoses and drug discoveries and offer better patient care. The company also announced AMD Vitis Medical Imaging libraries that help quickly deliver medical imaging on AMD Versal SoC devices with AI Engines.
Su said AMD’s adaptive computing solutions can also help satellites and spacecraft compute data and leverage pervasive AI to derive insights. She also said AMD adaptive SoCs powered multiple space missions: Mars Curiosity, Perseverance and Artemis moon mission.
