Will act against officials who bulldozed home, Assam tells HC | India News

GUWAHATI: The Assam government has informed the Gauhati HC that a committee comprising the state’s chief secretary was inquiring into the bulldozing of a Nagaon resident’s house by police and appropriate action would be taken against the errant officials within 15 days, reports Mukut Das. The submission was made on Tuesday before a division bench of chief justice RM Chhaya and justice Soumitra Saikia that was hearing a suo motu PIL.
After the government’s assurance, the HC directed it to take measures for compensating those affected by the “illegal action” and submit a report to the court. The case pertained to one of the houses that were razed after the Batadrava police station was set ablaze by a mob in May last year following the death of a 38-year-old fish seller, Safikul Islam, in police custody. Saiful had allegedly refused to give bribes to police for his release.
Police had filed a chargesheet against 24 accused in connection with the torching of the police station. During the probe, five houses were demolished by police and administration the same month on the pretext that these were illegally built on government land. During a hearing last November, the high court had rebuked the Assam police for demolishing the houses without legal sanction.
